Headbands

March 29th, 2010 — 1:19pm

Ever since I started trying on wedding dresses and I was forced to try on tiaras and veils with the dress to “complete the look” I realised I didn’t want one.

I’m 99.9% sure I won’t be wearing either a veil or tiara on my wedding day.
It’s just not me.

As stupid as it sounds, wearing a veil and tiara conjures up images in my head of me as a little girl playing dress up.

Therefore, I want a headband that makes a statement.  I love the headbands which have the detailing on the side.  Flo and Percy have gorgeous accessories.  Suzie wore their Clarice headband from the Gatsby collection during the evening at her wedding, which is absolutely gorgeous!

I really like their Chesire headband from their Wonderland collection

(model is a bit scary looking though!)

I’m having a real struggle at the moment finding something I’m in love with.  Don’t get me wrong there are loads of gorgeous headbands out there, I just have trouble picturing them being worn.  A lot of websites provide photos of the headband, but I think it really helps to have one of a model wearing it.

They have quite a few cute ones on Etsy.

This Rhinestone Headband is from TessaKim

Swarovski Rhinestone Headband from Brenda’s Bridal Veils

I like the pearls in this Heirloom side tiara headband from Glitzy Secrets
I found the Jennifer Behr website a while ago.. she tempts me with her stunning headbands.  Especially Dahlia
Want to know a secret…?  I haven’t actually tried on a side headband!  Yes, I could be fantasising on something that will look completely pants on.  Only one thing for it, mass headband trying on session is in order!

GHD’s, Champagne and Canapés

February 11th, 2010 — 9:48pm

I went to my hairdressers today to play model.  They had a trainer in from GHD to teach the ladies at my salon new curling, volume and texture techniques.  It was loads of fun and I actually learnt quite a bit too!  I end up with 8 different types of curls all over my head by the time the training was over.  Not exactly a great look!

Jo, my hairdresser tidied up my hair before I left the salon with a volumised bouncy curl.  I took this picture just before going to bed so it had fallen quite a bit.
We also attended Nailcote’s Bride of the Year competition, we didn’t win but it was still a really lovely evening.  The owners, Rick and Sue are such a lovely couple and put on a really nice evening for everyone.  It was also great to be able to see our venue again.  I haven’t been there since March last year and sitting in the room where we are actually going to get married was giving me goose pimples! 8 months 2 weeks to go!

Eyelash Drama

February 7th, 2010 — 6:36pm

Saturday morning after our night of cupcakes, Suzie and I headed to her local salon to have false eyelash extensions.

I watched as the lady attached individual lashes to Suzie’s eyelids and patiently waited for my turn.  She had done an amazingly good job with Suzie and I could wait to see how my eyes would look.

I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes.  Whether it was the fact that I hadn’t eaten breakfast or that the glue smelt really strong or even because I was trying to breathe through my nose even though I’m stuffed up so probably wasn’t getting enough oxygen or just a combination of all of the above, I started to feel faint.
I’ve never fainted before so I panicked a little bit.  My head started to spin and my hearing went funny.  ”Erm I feel really dizzy”

The lady let me open my eyes and that did help a little bit but it wasn’t until she had completely finished and I was able to sit up and open my eyes properly that I felt normal again.

This is the finished look, what so you think?

I’m not sure whether it’s because the lady was petrified I’d faint on her beauty table and rushed them towards the end but my lashes have turned out as well as Suzie’s.  I can see the individual lashes and the glue is a little messy.  You can’t tell Suzie has false lashes on but I think mine are really obvious.

Last night I had to pull the lashes closest to the corner of my eye away from the false lashes and the glue as every time I blinked it stung.  They feel much better today, but I don’t think they look all that great on me.

Suzie is planning to go back the Friday before her wedding to get more attached, she has asked me whether I would go back.  I probably will but I will have breakfast and make sure I breathe through my mouth!   Maybe without the threat of her client fainting the beautician will spend longer on mine!

Purple Nails

January 29th, 2010 — 9:42pm

I treated myself today to a manicure at Nails Inc.

The colour is actually purple not blue like it looks on the photo.

I’ve already managed to chip my thumb nail, which is usually what happens when I pay to have them done!  I rarely wear nail polish but when I do get a manicure it’s usually of the French kind, I have to say I’m quite liking the dark purple colour… maybe an idea for the wedding?!

Curly Wurly

January 21st, 2010 — 10:53am
I love the soft waves and swept fringe.  Very elegant, obviously this lady is a bridesmaid but I could possibly make it look a little more bridal with some hair candy in the form of grips, clips or slides.

I also love the gorgeous Blossom Comb and the Modern Heirloom Pins from Yarwood-White

and this cute crystal and pearl comb from Hair Comes The Bride
Maybe this weekend I’ll have a go at styling my hair so I can see just what hair piece would be needed.

All Booked In!

January 16th, 2010 — 10:08pm

I had my hair appointment today, good bye roots!

As well as bringing me back to blonde, it gave me the chance to talk to Jo about having her do my hair on the morning of the wedding.  She spoke to the owner for me and they have kindly agreed to open half an hour earlier for us so we’ll have a rush free hour and a half of serious hair pampering!
It makes a lot more sense for us to go to a salon, it means all of us can have our hair worked on at the same time rather than waiting for someone to finish before moving on to the next one.
I’ve told Jo my ideas about a curly side pony and she recommended a few new ideas for me to mull over.  We’re also going to try out a new colour which is ammonia free, so much better for my hair.
One of the styles she mentioned was incorporating a plait into a curly side do.  Similar to this but my hair would be curlier.
She’s suggested we trail out different ideas around August/September and coincide it with a dress fitting to make sure it all works together.
I’m pretty sure I’m going to be far too impatient to wait until August so I’ll be having an amateur trail at home some time soon!
All in all a very productive day!  No more roots and wedding hair appointment sorted!  Go me!

Hair, How?

January 12th, 2010 — 5:21pm

This Saturday I’ll be able to cross off another thing from my January to do list.  Me and my roots are off to see my hairdresser Jo so I’ll be able to bring up my questions about wedding hair!

I had hoped she would be able to come to the hotel on the morning of the wedding, however for insurance reasons this isn’t possible.  So me and my ladies shall be trekking out at the crack of dawn to be transformed!
Yes to make things easier I could hire a mobile hairdresser but Jo has been my hairdresser for nearly 5 years and she knows my hair.  I trust her completely and to be honest I don’t think I’d be happy with anyone else.
I don’t really wear my hair up.  If I’m at home, in my snugs then I’ll probably throw it in a pony tail, but other than that my hair is generally down.  So it only seems right that for my wedding day my hair should be down, or at least the majority of it.  To have it up in a fancy do just wouldn’t be me.
I’ve always imagined I would have long hair in loose curls, but not so normal!  For our engagement party I had my hair curled.  They were quite tight curls and although I love how my hair looks, most people have seen me with my hair like that.  It also makes my hair look shorter than it is.
I’ve been thinking about alternative styles.  A way I can have my hair that doesn’t take it too much away from my face, but is slightly different and more elegant than the norm and how I can maybe incorporate hair jewellery.
My favourite styles (and probably my only options!) at the moment are side ponies
and half up half down.
It’s quite easy to curl my hair myself, so I may have a go at seeing how the styles would suit me.  I can discuss these styles with Jo and see what she thinks, but hopefully as of Saturday I’ll have sorted out the hairdresser at least!

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…

December 21st, 2009 — 4:41pm

…Who is the fairest of them all!

I know I still have a little while to go but for a while now I’ve upped the ante on my skin care regime.  I don’t think it’s something that can change over night, although I have seen an improvement quite quickly, I think for wonderful gleaming skin it needs to be a long term commitment.

To start with I’ve been drinking a lot more water to hydrate my skin.  I find now that I can feel quite dry if I do not drink enough.

My night time skin care routine used to consist of quickly wiping my face with a make up remover wipe and exfoliating when I thought about it.  My skin was never bad, but it wasn’t great either.

I’ve started by wearing a lot less make up.  I used to wear foundation every day, now I dot my face with powder and only wear foundation if I’m going out.

Also every night without fail, no matter how tired or drunk I always complete the following to take off my make up.

I lightly rub Nivea Visage eye make up remover across my eye lids and lashes to remove my mascara and eye make up, I’m completely paranoid by eye wrinkles so I never rub too hard!

I then cleanse my face with Simple Purifying Cleaner.
Then to finish I use Simple Kind To Skin Soothing Facial Toner.

Once all my make up has been removed I then lightly dab Garnier Ultra Lift eye cream around my eyes.  I’m very conscious of eye wrinkles!  Since I was about 21 I have religiously applied eye cream every night.

I then moisturise with Olay Beauty Fluid.
Once a week I use Clinique Exfoliating Scrub, it leaves my skin feeling really smooth and clean.  I love it!
My morning routine is a little simpler.  I use Clinique All About Eyes Rich as it really moisturises the skin around my eyes and makes a great base for eye make up.  I then moisturise with Clinique Dramtically Different Moisturing Gel.  If my skin feels a little oily then I use a small amount of The Body Shop Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream as recommended by my friend and beautician Harriet!
Since ditching the face wipes and committing to this routine I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my skin, I rarely get break outs and my skin looks fresher.  Closer to the wedding I may invest in a few professional facials, not just as a way to make my skin glow but I feel I deserve a little pampering…

Bambification Complete!

December 21st, 2009 — 9:05am

I have never worn fake eyelashes before, but after a recommendation from my hairdresser I went and bought a pair.  It’s not that my eyelashes are short they just never stayed curled and are quite fair towards the tip so it makes them look shorter.  Since I am engaged to a man with eyelashes that rival Bambi I have a little eyelash envy!

I actually bought the false eyelashes a few months ago but could never get the hang of putting them on, but as they say practise makes perfect!

Eye before Bambification

After, flutter-tastic!

What do you think?

I’m going to give them a whirl New Year’s Eve to see how I get on with them!

P.S I told you I was an amateur eyelash attacher – It’s just been pointed out I have the wrong eyelash on the wrong eye!  Oops!

Update: Look after yourself

November 26th, 2009 — 10:34am

When I wrote this post, Look after yourself I was suffering with a terrible cold.  I took my own advice and started having a hot honey and lemon drink every morning with my breakfast.  By the end of that week my cold had pretty much disappeared.

I’m still drinking a hot honey and lemon every morning and whilst everyone around me is coming down with colds I haven’t had a sniffle since!

Good ‘ol honey and lemon!
